Save, and Save As, Part 2

Save

When you save a file, Word adds “.docx” to the name of your file. This four letter extension tells Windows to open your file in Word 2007.

Try it: Open a blank Microsoft Word document

  • Type, "Dr. Green

  • Go to Office ->Save

  • Browse to your Documents folder

  • Name the document: Letter to Dr. Green

  • Click on Save or press the Enter key on your keyboard.

Save As

Save As is used to make a copy of your work. It is a fast method of “cloning” a letter, editing a few lines of copy, and completing your work. Save As is also used for making different version of a document.

Try it: Open the Letter to Dr. Green

  • Change the text to read, "Dr. Smith"

  • Save As, "Letter to Dr. Smith"

  • Change the File Type to Word 97-2003

Verify that you have two different letters:

one to Dr. Smith.doc and another to Dr. Green.docx
